Service of the Word for Candlemas with the Laying-on-Hands
St Thomas’ Church, Mount Merrion Co. Dublin

The second day of February each year is the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, also known as Candlemas and it is the official last day of the celebration of Christ’s birth.  According to Jewish Law, a baby boy had to be presented in the temple, forty days after his birth – 50 days after her birth for a baby girl.

Today, we will light candles for Candlemas and it will be the last time that the candles on the Advent Wreath are lit.  After today, the Wreath will be removed from the church.

From time to time, we have a service of wholeness and healing with the laying-on-of-hands at which we pray for the healing of people, communities, nations and the world.  At that service, there is also the opportunity for people to come forward for the laying-on-of-hands either for themselves or for someone else, and we will be including this in our service today.  All are welcome.
